Long known for its unassuming location in an industrial corner of the Lodi AVA, the m2 winery and tasting room has recently moved into a spanking new winery and tasting room (as of 2014) on E. Peltier Rd. that has drawn rave reviews for its low slung, “inside/outside” design that tucks into Lodi Wine Country like a nest in the arms of an old vine.
But make no mistake: m2 will always be about the wine and people; not appearances, bells or whistles. Since 2004 the mission has remained sharply focused on dynamic artisanal style wines, crafted to highlight distinctive vineyards — especially in Lodi, but also the Sierra Foothills and Napa Valley.
When you visit m2 you are more than likely to bump into winemaker/founder Layne Montgomery (one of the 2 original “M’s” — the other has flown the coop), or else assistant winemaker Mark Sanford or his wife Jan (who manages m2’s Cellar Dwellers Wine Club), personally showing visitors around, shooting the breeze or tasting from barrels. You are also likely to see co-owner Ted Woodruff or his brother Terry (maybe even nephew Brian), often doing the pouring in the tasting room or attending to other details. If it feels like “family” at m2 — well, it’s Lodi, and it’s the way m2 does things: driven primarily by an original obsession with crafting artisanal wines capturing the individuality of a winemaker (that would be Mr. Montgomery) and, just as strongly, the distinctive qualities of vineyards.
