Macchia is a small, 100% family owned and run winery with a charming tasting room located on the north edge of Lodi’s historic Mokelumne River AVA. The Holdener family’s passion is obviously Zinfandel — Macchia produces more than ten single-vineyard bottlings, mostly from choice, gnarly vine growths in Lodi, some up to 150 years old. Macchia has also made its rep with some of the state’s finest Italian varietal bottlings (Sangiovese, Barbera, and Nebbiolo); winning top honors in most of the major wine competitions; including “Best of Shows,” “Best of States,” and “Best Barbera Produced Outside Italy” (the latter, twice!).
The grounds surrounding Macchia’s tasting room, winery, barrel rooms and family home are some of the most inviting in the appellation. You can play bocce, horseshoes, or just relax at tables or on the grass under mature shade trees. There are many spots to linger, enjoy a leisurely lunch (visitors are welcome to bring their own picnic), and hang out. You can taste the entire line-up in an idyllic cottage serving as the Macchia tasting room, which is also filled with charming gift items, hand selected by co-owners Lani Holdener and (daughter) Tanya McMahon.
